Varial Cedric Houin is a photographer, filmmaker, visual artist, writer, seeker and musician. He was born in Paris, lived 10 years in Montreal as a multiplateform visual artist, and has been travelling around the planet since 2010 as a nomadic author helping communities and foundations with his photographic, film, design and communication skills and vision.
He has won National Geographic Photo contest in 2012 and has been published by The New York Times, the Smithonian. He has travelled and shoot in Ecuador, Salvador, Belize, Guatemala, Mexico, Tajikistan, India, Afghanistan, Borneo, Malaysia, to document the life and fight of indigenous communities. His personal work on Afghanistan has been exhibited at the United Nations in 2013 and his first movie Wakhan received best documentary prize in Canada.
Single child, with unknown grandfathers, a free spirit traveler pianist grandmother named “Moon,” an intellectual loving mother, a father who worked for 40 years in Africa, South America, and the Pacific, he grew up travelling the world, while studying in Paris. Questioning and exploring realities, driven and attracted by extreme journeys, remote places, tribes and threatened cultures, his approach to documentary is immersive, physical and lyrical, spiritual and psychedelic. Obsessed by untold realities, rare captured moments, simple but novel realities, striving for the sublime, he has put his artistic chops in the service of the planet.
